In 399 BCE, the always-annoying philosopher Socrates was put on trial by the Athenians and found guilty of ‘inventing new gods’ and ‘corrupting the young.’ He was sentenced to death by drinking hemlock. While in prison awaiting execution, he was visited by many friends, who unsuccessfully urged him to escape. The last days of Socrates are the subject of four dialogues by his student Plato: The Apology, Euthyphro, Phaedo and Crito.
